Word Grid Games covers one narrow thing properly: the timed letter-grid word game. A square of random letters, a short clock, and points for words you find yourself by linking letters that touch. Boggle defined the format in 1972 and it now exists as a Netflix TV game, a licensed mobile app, an iMessage add-on, a handful of browser boards and a growing number of independent games.

What this site is not about: word searches, crosswords, anagram puzzles or daily-guess games. They are fine. They are not this.

How games are compared

Every game is compared on the same six questions, because they are the ones that decide whether it fits your life:

1. Where does it actually run? Not what the marketing says — which devices, and what else has to be switched on in the room before anybody can play.
2. What does it cost to start? Free, ad-supported, subscription, or an app-store price.
3. Can you play with specific people you know? Private rounds with named friends, or only anonymous matchmaking.
4. Do those people have to be in the room? The single biggest dividing line in this genre.
5. Does it work alone? Most people play solo far more often than they admit.
6. How intrusive is the advertising? Especially advertising inside a timed round, which is uniquely damaging here.

How facts are handled

To be explicit about what this site is and is not. Of the games covered here, exactly one has been played by the person writing this: Word Night, which is also the one made by that person — a conflict stated plainly on the disclosure page. Everything said about every other game is compiled from the publishers' own documentation, their store listings and published player feedback, and none of it is a hands-on verdict. Where we describe how something feels to play, it is attributed to whoever said it. As the other games get played properly, the screenshots and the dates will appear on the pages that cover them.

• Platform support, prices, modes and requirements come from the publishers' own pages and store listings, and carry the month they were checked.
• Ratings and review counts are quoted with their source and date, because they move.
• Claims that come from players rather than publishers — the recurring suspicion about automated opponents, for example — are labelled as player reports, not stated as fact.
• When something turns out to be wrong or out of date, it gets corrected rather than quietly deleted.

This is a personal project, not a company. It is written by the same person who makes Word Night, one of the games covered here, and nothing on it is monetised. The disclosure page explains what that does and does not mean for what you read.
