Boggle With Friends: the ads, the outages, and where else to go

It is the officially licensed Boggle on phones and it has been running for over a decade. It is also the app whose recent one and two-star reviews keep circling the same subject — and that subject is not the word game. Add the mornings when it simply will not load, and a lot of long-time players end up here.
In short. Boggle With Friends is the genuine licensed article and still actively updated, and for a slow game with one friend it does the job. Two things drive people away from it. The first is advertising: full-screen video around and between rounds, in a game whose entire appeal is a two-minute burst of concentration, with no way to pay once and be rid of it. The second is that when Zynga's servers are having a bad day, your evening is over. Neither problem applies to a browser game: nothing to install, nothing to update, no store standing between you and the round, and no app that has to be having a good day before you can play.
Is Boggle With Friends on Android and iPhone?
Yes, on both. Zynga publishes it on Google Play and on the App Store, it is free to download, it passed a million downloads long ago and it is still being updated — 20 April 2026 on Google Play, 16 July 2026 on the App Store. So if the question was simply "can I get Boggle onto my phone", the answer is yes, and this is the app.
The question most people are actually asking is a different one, and no store listing answers it: can I play Boggle on my phone, with the people I want, all of us at once? There the answer changes. Boggle With Friends is built around a match played turn by turn — you play your board, your opponent plays theirs whenever they next open the app, and the scores get compared afterwards. It is two people, taking turns, with a wait in the middle. Everybody has to install it first, everybody makes an account, and everybody sits through the advertising.
That is the gap. The evening people remember — four of you round a table, same letters, same clock, shouting — is not what a turn-based app gives you, and it is not something you fix by finding a better app in the same store. It is a different shape of game.
First, if it just stopped working
"Why is Boggle With Friends not working today" is a recurring complaint, and it usually resolves to one of five things. Work through them in order:
Check whether it is just you. If matches will not load or the app hangs at the splash screen for a lot of people at once, it is server-side and there is nothing to fix on your phone.
Check Zynga's own support channels. The publisher is the only source that can confirm an outage or a required update, and the only one that can recover an account.
Update the app, then restart the device. The two steps that are always safe to try.
Try another connection. A game that syncs constantly is one of the first things a restrictive office, school or VPN network breaks. Thirty seconds on mobile data tells you whether the network is the problem.
Contact Zynga before reinstalling. Reinstalling can affect progress that is not linked to an account, and only the publisher can tell you what is recoverable. Do not treat a reinstall as a first resort.
All five are worth doing if your history in that app matters to you. If what you actually wanted was to play Boggle tonight, none of them are the fastest route to that.
The advertising problem
Read through the recent one and two-star reviews on either store and the same subject keeps coming back: advertising, specifically full-screen video appearing around and between rounds. A timed word game and an unskippable video are structurally at odds — you spend two minutes concentrating and get handed thirty seconds of someone else's app — which is why this particular complaint lands harder here than it would in a puzzle you play at your own pace.
The second most common note is more revealing: players saying they would happily pay a one-off price to remove the advertising altogether, and finding they cannot. Zynga's Google Play listing describes its in-app purchases as being for "additional content and in-game currency" — nothing in it advertises a way to buy the advertising away. People asking to be sold something and being refused is not a small signal, and it explains why almost every route out of this app is either subscription-funded or simply lives in a browser.
For balance, the ratings are not catastrophic. It sits at 3.8 out of 5 on Google Play from about 26,700 ratings and 4.5 on the App Store from around 44,000, both checked on 28 July 2026, it passed a million downloads long ago, it runs in nine languages, and Zynga has kept it updated: 20 April 2026 on Google Play, 16 July 2026 on the App Store. Plenty of people play happily. The unhappiness is concentrated and specific rather than universal — and it is concentrated on exactly the thing that made you search.
A note on who you are matched with
Players in both of Zynga's Boggle apps write reviews arguing that some opponents behave like bots — on Boggle: Arcade Edition, and on this app too, where a Google Play review dated 18 June 2026 says the tournaments are "filled with Zynga bots" and that the difficulty jumps in the final round.
What can be said accurately: these are player interpretations of how matchmaking behaves, Zynga does not publish how it fills games, and nobody outside the company can confirm or refute them. The practical response is the same either way, and it is the response to most of this page: stop being matched with strangers, and play with the people you actually wanted to play with.

Word Night
The same letter-grid format, in a browser, with nothing between you and the round: no store, no install, no account, no update to wait for. One person starts a round and sends a link or a six-character code, and up to eight people play the same grid on the same clock at the same moment — in one room or spread across three countries. Where Boggle With Friends is a slow exchange between two people interrupted by video, this is everybody at once, and it ends with one shared reveal: every word found in that round with the name of whoever found it, which is the part people actually stay for. Plays in English or Italian, and a solo round starts instantly when nobody else is free.

Boggle: Arcade Edition
Zynga's premium Boggle, on Apple Arcade since 2024: Apple's listing states no ads and no in-app purchases, and it has a classic mode, a power-up mode and an endless solo Adventure. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV and supports SharePlay, so two Apple households can play inside a FaceTime call. The price of escaping the advertising is a monthly subscription and a hardware requirement that quietly removes every Android friend from your list.

If you are on Android and want nothing selling to you
Lexica
A free, open-source letter-grid game for Android, and a long-standing recommendation among people who just want to play without being marketed at. Its F-Droid listing is unusually blunt: "Fully open source. No ads. No in-app purchases. No tracking. Ever." Boards go up to 6×6 and it ships several international dictionaries. Its multiplayer is not live — you send a challenge by message or QR code and the other person plays the same board whenever they get to it.
Pro: No advertising, no purchases and no tracking, on an open-source licence
Con: Android only — nobody on an iPhone can join you
Con: Last release July 2024, and it looks like the hobby project it is
Con: No live round: you never actually play at the same time as anyone
If you would rather play strangers
Microsoft Wordament
Thousands of strangers racing the same board at the same second, which is thrilling for about a week and never once feels like your friends. There is no way to organise a private game with three named people, which is the whole reason most players open a Boggle app in the first place. Free, with advertising and in-app purchases, and nothing has shipped since October 2025.

Am I matched with real people?
Zynga does not publish how its matchmaking fills games. Reviews on both Boggle With Friends and Boggle: Arcade Edition argue that some opponents behave like bots, but those are player interpretations rather than confirmed facts, and nothing in the listings confirms or denies it. The way to remove the doubt entirely is to stop using automatic matching and play with people you know, in a private round you set up yourself.
Is Boggle With Friends the same as Netflix's Boggle Party?
No. Different publishers, different formats: Zynga's is a turn-based mobile app you play on your own phone, while Netflix's is a live party game where everyone finds words on their own phone and a TV or computer hosts the round and keeps the score. Netflix's version also needs everybody in the same room.
Yes, and it is the thing to do. Invite them directly rather than using automatic matching, which also removes any doubt about who is on the other side. If you want several named friends in the same round rather than one at a time, that is what a private browser room does.
