Word Hunt is the best-loved version of the timed letter-grid race and the most locked-in: it lives inside iMessage, so it never leaves Apple. One person in the group chat switches phone, half the thread cannot open the invite, and a game everybody enjoyed quietly stops happening. Here is what to play instead — starting with the one that has no platform to be locked out of.
Quick answer. There is no Word Hunt on Android, and the obstacle is structural rather than commercial: GamePigeon is an iMessage extension, and iMessage only runs on Apple devices. The cleanest replacement is a game with no app store in front of it: Word Night opens in any browser from a single link, so an iPhone, an Android phone and a laptop can all be in the same round, racing the same grid on the same clock, with nothing installed and no account. If you specifically want a store app, Word Blitz does one-on-one duels and Wordament does public boards against strangers. Be careful with app-store results named "Word Hunt": most of them are word searches, which is a completely different game.
Why there is no Word Hunt on Android
GamePigeon is built as an iMessage app extension, and Apple has never shipped iMessage for Android, so the extension has nowhere to run. That is a platform boundary rather than a business decision, which is why a decade of asking has changed nothing. The workarounds people try — message bridges, browser re-creations of the grid — tend to be unreliable, unmaintained, or both, and routing your messages through a third party for a two-minute word game is a lot of risk for a small reward.
The real cost is social, and it is the reason you are reading this. Group chats are mixed. Somebody sends an invite, half the group cannot open it, and after two attempts nobody sends one again.
Clear up the name first
Searching for "word hunt" returns two unrelated genres:
The grid race — sixteen random letters, a short timer, find words by linking letters that touch. This is the GamePigeon one, and the format Boggle invented.
Word searches — you are given a word list and hunt for those words in a large static grid. Dozens of store apps use "Word Hunt" in their titles.
The quickest test is the screenshots: a list of words down the side means it is a word search, and it is not the game you are missing.
The alternatives worth your time

Word Blitz
Two players, same grid, highest score wins — the format Word Hunt players recognise immediately, and the app many of them land on after switching phones. Free, on both stores, and the most actively maintained app on this page: last Google Play update 14 July 2026, rated 4.3 out of 5 there from about 42,000 ratings. It is built for two, so a group takes turns waiting, and advertising is a recurring theme in its reviews.

If you are on Android and want nothing selling to you
Lexica
Somebody built the whole game, gave it away, and put nothing inside it that wants anything from you. Boards up to 6×6 and several international dictionaries. Two things to know before you rely on it: it is Android only, so the iPhone half of your group still cannot join, and its multiplayer is not live — you send a challenge and the other person plays the same board later, so you never actually play at the same time.

Word Hunt itself
Worth stating plainly: if every single person you play with owns an Apple device, Word Hunt is free and takes seconds to start from a message thread. The moment that stops being true — one new phone, one new friend — it stops being an option for the whole group at once, which is usually why people end up here.

What to skip
Solvers and cheat apps. They rank well for a reason and they remove the only thing the game does — the discovery. A round where the answer is handed over is not a round.

Anything with a word list in the screenshots. That is a word search, not this game.
